Justin, this is a pretty standard flash vs. ambient situation. Since the flash exposure isn't affected by the shutter speed you can use the shutter speed to control the ambient exposure separately from the flash. The setup was a simple SB900 flash on a stand with a slight warming gel and diffuser to camera left. It's fired wirelessly via the Nikon CLS system with a D700 camera. Exposure is set to slightly underexpose the background and the flash exposure is determined by the camera iTTL system. In a few days when I'm free to use the shots, I'll post a detailed description with some outtakes.

Hi Mark,
What kind of camera settings and set up were used to capture this excellent photo?
