Rebuilding the portfolios

Over the years I have added photographs to the website as I edited them and used whatever technology was available and affordable at the the time to scan and process the images. The result was a loosely edited collection of images that in many cases did not reflect the quality of the original photographs. Some of the images were processed at a time when accurate color management practices were not standard in common software packages and looking back at some of the images with a modern, well-calibrated monitor made me a little sick to my stomach. Often the website images languished even though I had excellent master scans used for making prints. Also, since the original site was designed back when CSS was in its infancy, I had chosen to use borders and shadows directly in the image files. This makes creating a new design that doesn't use shadows difficult since I would need to recreate each jpeg without the borders and shadows. Rather than try to fix each image, I've decided to take a clean slate approach and start over. Hopefully this will allow me to edit the images with a closer eye to detail and remain a little more disciplined in my editing practices for the website.

I have also decided to take a stricter approach in deciding which images make the cut for the website. This is a difficult decision because I've found over the years that I am not particularly good at predicting which images are commercially viable. Some images that I thought were a little weak have attracted attention from photo buyers for reasons that I don't always understand. By scaling back the number of images on the website I risk losing the business of the occasional sales, but that is a risk that for artistic reasons I am willing to take. I don't intend and never have intended photo-mark.com to be a stock photography site which gives me the freedom to avoid the numbers game of stock photography.

I plan on posting quick notes here as I upload images. Subscribing to the RSS feed is probably the easiest way to keep up-to-date if you are interested in such things or you can simply check out the recent images set from time to time.
