Tom Harrell, recording session, Chicago

Tom Harrell, recording session | Chicago

Although I've been in this house since early summer, I still have a couple unsorted boxes of negatives from the move. I came across this image of Tom Harrell from a recording session several years ago at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. It's been a while since I've shot 35mm film and I forgot how cool TMAX 3200 is. Although you can't really tell from a small web-sized jpeg, the gritty grain and contrast already lend a vintage feel to an image only shot a few years ago. I wonder if digital noise will ever look vintage or if it will always just look bad.

If you are interested in music or psychology, Tom is an interesting guy who has become a world-class jazz musician while dealing with schizophrenia. Charlie Rose did a 60 Minutes story about him in 2003 and the magazine from Stanford (his Alma Mater) has a more recent article.
